7 Tips on Becoming an Independent Sewing Contractor

Is finding jobs to grow your independent sewing business something you struggle with? Many people need clothing repairs, custom jobs, alterations, and custom items such as hats, bags, etc. To connect with them, you need to have and know how to use the right advertising tools to target the audience you want.

Promotional Materials

One way to attract customers is through promotional materials: business cards, brochures, or flyers. If possible, work with a graphics designer to ensure a professional look and include a slogan or an adopted symbol, such as a sewing machine. Once you have your materials, distribute them to people you know and meet. Post them on local bulletin boards at senior living and community centers, churches, laundromats, apartment buildings, coffee shops, etc.

Advertise to Showcase Your Sewing Machine Skills

To attract customers, advertise in local papers or with online classifieds. In the wording, have a shortlist of the types of sewing you do. For example, note that you can install zippers with your sewing machine

Partnerships with Local Businesses

Establishing partnerships with local businesses is a great way to gain customers. Ask around to local dry cleaners, textile product manufacturers, sports teams, theater groups and find out what they need from contract sewers. Always leave a business card or brochure with your contact information. Remember, establishing relationships takes time and repeated contact.

Ask for Referrals

Ask your existing customers and friends for referrals. Upon completion of a job, give your customer some business cards and ask if they know anyone who might need the services of you and your sewing machine. Happy customers are usually happy to pass along recommendations.

Community Activism

Become active in the community. For example, support local charities, foundations, or events by buying advertising, volunteering, or providing free sample services crafted by you with your sewing machine. This will help you build relationships and put your name out there. People love supporting businesses that support local organizations and charities.

Ask for Work

Always have business cards and hand them out freely. Ask people what sewing works for them. That can be particularly effective at networking and social events.

Specialize and Target

Consider what sewing areas you can specialize in:

  • Draperies
  • Dressmaking
  • Repairing clothing
  • Tailoring
  • Costumes

You can upscale to suits, dresses, and ensembles.

Once you have a specialization, find the target audience for it. For example, if your specialty is costumes, approach the local theater or schools (of all levels) that put on plays. Advertise your services to your target audience using the previous suggestions.

Persist

It may take some time and extra work initially, and you may have to use a combination of methods. However, once you start putting the word out about what you offer with your sewing machine, you’ll find your sewing business will start gaining momentum.
