Why Is My Sewing Machine Not Working?

Why Is My Sewing Machine Not Working?

Whether you use your sewing machine for professional reasons or you’re an avid DIY crafter, there’s nothing more frustrating than a machine that simply won’t respond the way you need it to.

There are many different types of sewing machine issues that crafters can experience, so let’s take a look at a few of the most common issues and what might be causing them.

My Fabric Won’t Feed

If your fabric doesn’t feed, check to see if your sewing machine has an inactivated setting for drop feeding. Make sure your presser foot is in the down position and set to the proper pressure for the fabric you’re using. You can also check whether your fabric is all the way beneath your needle before the presser foot is lowered.

My Needles Are Broken or Bent

Always replace your needle before starting a new project to avoid broken or bent needles. Use the correct needle type for your project and stop sewing the moment you notice your needle bend or break. If you’re using the proper needle for the job but the issue persists, it may be an internal mechanical issue with your sewing machine.

My Thread Is Bunching Up While Sewing

Bunched-up thread can be caused by a variety of factors. Before trying any remedies, make sure to carefully remove the thread from inside the machine. Then, try re-threading the machine according to your sewing machine manual’s instructions.

You could also try removing and re-threading your bobbin or checking to see that the type of thread in your top thread and bobbin is the same.

My Sewing Machine Keeps Skipping Stitches

If your sewing machine won’t stop skipping stitches, check that the needle is properly installed, not damaged, and the correct type for the material you’re working with. You may need to re-thread your sewing machine to make sure your top thread is reaching the bobbin.

My Seams Are Wavy in Stretchy Fabric

When your seams are coming out wavy on stretchy fabric, first make sure that you’re properly supporting the fabric during stitching. If you’re still having the same issue, adjust your presser foot’s pressure or switch to using a walking foot.
