DIY Bench Cushion Cover!

A decorative bench or cozy window seat can be a great addition to any home when upgrading interior design standards. They look great in entryways, spruce up living rooms, and provide a functional purpose when you need a seat.

While they’re designed to be helpful, these long benches can also be the victims of spots and stains over time. When you can change up the bench cushion cover whenever you need, you can eliminate this problem!

When you’re hoping not to spend a bundle on a brand-new cushion cover every time there’s a spill, this DIY bench cushion cover is a great alternative. With a sewing machine in hand, it’s a project that gives you the freedom to mix and match fun fabrics for a bench that could use a minor touch-up.

Materials You’ll Need

This DIY project doesn’t take long and doesn’t require much in the way of supplies either. Grab the following to get started:

  • Decorative fabric
  • Foam cushion anywhere from 1-inch to 5-inches high
  • Flat elastic ¼ inch or ½ inch wide
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Sewing pins
  • Ruler
  • Iron

Once you have your supplies gathered and have fired up the sewing machine, you’ll be a step closer to creating a charming, eye-catching, and machine-washable cushion cover!

Step-by-Step Instruction

  1. Pre-wash your decorative fabric and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Measure the length, width, and depth of the fabric.
  3. Multiply each measurement by 2.5 inches to ensure there is enough fabric for creating your cover design.
  4. Cut the fabric based on your measurements.
  5. Lay the fabric down on a flat surface with the decorative side down and center the cushion in the middle using a ruler for accuracy.
  6. Cut the four corner squares out of the fabric.
  7. Bring the right sides of each cut corner together and pin them in place.
  8. Sew each corner together to create a pocket before trimming the edges down to 1/8 of an inch.
  9. Iron the seam allowance on each of the four corners so that it’s nice and flat.
  10. Sew close to the gutter at each corner seam allowance to create a smooth finish.
  11. Insert the cushion into the cover.
  12. Press a ¼ inch fold around the entire cover parameter.
  13. Place the flat elastic over the raw edge of the fabric.
  14. Zigzag stitch around the elastic until you’re back at your starting point.

Once the finishing stitches are in place, the DIY cushion cover is ready to be used!
