DIY Pillowcases

When it’s time to refresh the look of your bedroom, creating a DIY pillowcase is a good place to start. This 15-minute project is a fun and simple way to add colors and patterns to your sleeping space. As long as you have a sewing machine at home, you’re in a good place to start getting creative!

This project doesn’t take up much time at all and lets you put fabrics you love to good use. While new fabrics will do the trick, there’s no reason not to upcycle shower curtains or tablecloths into one-of-a-kind pillowcases you’ll fall in love with all over again.

Materials You’ll Need to Create a Great Pillowcase

Whether you’re looking forward to creating a DIY pillowcase in standard 20-inch by 26-inch dimensions or can’t wait to craft a queen or king pillowcase, the materials you’ll need to make it happen are fairly straightforward. You’ll want to gather:

• Sewing Machine
• 1 to 2-yards of fabric
• Straight pins
• Iron
• Scissors
• Thread

Instructions for Creating a Standard 20-Inch x 26-Inch Pillowcase

1. Cut two pieces of fabric out that each measure 29.5-inches by 21-inches.
2. Fold the long end of one piece of fabric over 3.5-inches to create a seam near the opening of the pillowcase.
3. Iron the folded seam flat and use straight pins to keep the edges in place.
4. Sew along the bottom edge of the fabric to secure the seam and create a cuff.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 with the second piece of fabric.
6. Line up the right sides of both pieces of fabric so the cuffs are even at the opening of the pillowcase.
7. Use straight pins to secure the three sides of the pillowcase together. Leave the cuff end open.
8. Use a sewing machine to create straight lines around the three pinned edges of the pillowcase.
9. Turn the pillowcase right side out and iron it flat.
10. Slip the pillowcase over a pillow and enjoy the look of your new DIY creation!
