Handmade Stockings

Everyone has worked on a few skills this year, and stockings are a great way to introduce new techniques to young sewers. They’re also a great craft to fill up an afternoon if the family could use a new set of holiday chimney-wear!

Now you can get started with some classic plaid or any fabric that catches your eye. The faux fur trim will give all of your stockings a dash of elegance, and it’s super simple to attach!

Collect Your Materials

This materials list is for one stocking, so if you’re making many stockings, you might want to up your fabric and faux fur trim volume.

  • 1/2 -yard fabric  (plaid is always a favorite and usually on sale. However, you can make a stocking out of quilter’s cotton and other fabrics as well. Try to just stay away from jersey fabrics or materials with a 4-way stretch)
  • 16-inches of faux fur 4-inches wide (or whatever fabric you would like as the top of the stocking)
  • White pencil or washable fabric marker
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun (and glue)
  • Sewing machine

Snip, Sew, and Stuff Your Stockings

If you already have a stocking on hand, you can simply trace the outline of that stocking onto your fabric. If you don’t have a stocking to trace, you can sketch out a reasonably sized stocking shape, and you’re ready to get started. Standard stockings are approximately 20-inches long (considering seam allowances), 12-inches wide at the foot, and about 8-inches wide across the cuff.

  1. Fold the fabric in half with right sides together and cut the two stocking pieces.
  2. Sit down behind your sewing machine and give the top of each piece a 1/2-inch hem.
  3. Sew the pieces together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance - leave the top open. (Inside out)
  4. Turn the project - it should now look like a traditional stocking!
  5. Cut the ribbon down to 6-inches and pin inside the front of the stocking.
  6. Sew the ribbon loop into place
  7. Use your hot glue gun to apply the faux fur around the top of the stocking.
