Step by Step: How to Make a Lanyard

Lanyards are used for a variety of purposes, especially in educational and professional settings. If you have to wear a lanyard every day to work or school, why not customize it a bit by creating your own DIY version?

This sewing machine lanyard craft will be just as fun as it is easy and quick.

What Materials Will I Need?

The materials you’ll need to make this craft include:

  • Sewing machine

  • Sewing machine accessories (thread, needles, scissors, ruler, iron)

  • 2.5 in x 36.5 in of any fabric of your choice

  • Fusible interfacing (for thin fabrics)

  • Lobster clasp

With these materials, you’ll have your very own DIY lanyard in no time!

DIY Lanyard Instructions

Cut your fabric on the straight grain, as cutting on the cross grain will cause unwanted stretch. A rotary cutter is recommended to create straight, neat edges.

If you’re using a thin fabric, grab your fusible interfacing and press it onto the wrong side of your fabric.

Press your fabric’s raw edges on its wrong side so that the edges meet in the middle. Press it in half once more to encase the raw edges. Keep the fabric in place using pins or clips.

Thread your lobster clip onto your lanyard. Unfold the fabric’s pressed ends and grab your sewing machine. With the right sides placed together, sew the lanyard’s two ends together to make a closed loop with a 1/4 in seam allowance.

Press the seam open at the loop’s end. Fold your fabric into quarters to create a continuous loop and pin it in place. You may want to iron the creases where they join.

With your sewing machine, stitch along both edges of the lanyard. Move the lobster clip out of the way when needed.

Fold your lanyard in half with the lobster clip on the end. Your seam should also be on the end through the clip’s loop. Stitch across the lanyard several times to secure the lobster clip in place.

Now you have a beautiful, unique lanyard to wear to work or school! If you’d like to customize this craft to make a shorter wrist lanyard, you can follow the same steps with a shorter piece of fabric (about 2 in x 13 in).
